Paul Deaton was born in London and raised in Wales. His Seren collection A Watchful Astronomy was a Poetry Book Society Winter Recommended Book 2017 and a Jen Campbell read of 2017 and is a National Poetry Book Group selected title (October 2018). Work is included in the Forward Prize Anthology 2019. Runner-up in the Arvon International Poetry Competition 2010, winner of the SaveAs Writers International Poetry Prize 2016 and more recently shortlisted for the Wolverhampton Poetry Prize 2018 and Plough Prize 2018. His work appears regularly in The Spectator, is included in York Press for GCSE poetry study guides and in various magazines & anthologies including PN Review, The London Magazine, The Dark Horse, New Boots & Pantisocracies. Eyewear published his pamphlet Black Knight (2016). A marathon runner, he is a counselor in addictions and works for the NHS in Bristol.
